Sorry, a bit more insights and criticism would be nice. It's not all a success story. And is it a coincidence this post sees the light of day, just short after this blogpost ;-) : http://www.socialmediatoday.com/SMC/78962. The latter 'analysis' on the Starbucks case by the way is also a bit one sided (too negative). The reply by a Starbucks employee is spot on and profound; there's more to see below the surface. True. Even seen from the point of view of Starbucks.

But what does it all do for Starbucks in the stores? Its costumers? For the brand in general? Do they need it? Would we think different about them without their BigIdea site? And what about effectiveness whilst talking to their community? The most important issue for example, the coffee lid, hasn't been addressed yet.

So it's nice to collaborate, initiate, engage, talk, blab, etc etc and it's fairly easy too. But what a brand differs from the rest, is what it does with/for its community? How creative are they (besides talking)? What kind of (unique) content do they produce/come up with? In what way are trying to stand out? Etc etc etc. Talking was 2009, surprising and entertaining (in a creative way) is 2010...

By the way Coca Cola has a very good campaign as we speak: http://expedition206.com/ in which they are building on their vastness, being generic and being owned by the world (their customers): three bloggers/fans visit all 206 CC markets and report through all relevant social media on their findings...

Thanks for your comment Matthew. I agree that the point is the same with customer-facing communities, although in that case the characteristics of the initial relationship differ quite a bit. Involvement for customers is not obligatory a priori, but such a relationship can be built.

Building and keeping good reciprocal relationships is a must when great ideas are shared and elaborated upon. Trust needs to be built and earned, and misuse of power by management is not beneficial for engagement. Unless you only want to engage just once and then thank your employees or customers for their input and time and just move on like usual....

Impressive synthesize and commentary, Bas. I think the key sentence is "Employee engagement can only thrive if management is really participative." I tend to focus on customer-facing communities, but the point is the same. If everyone isn't involved, and if what is discussed in the community doesn't translate into good things happening outside the community, then there will be no long term engagement. If employees (or customers) come up with some great ideas, for example, and nothing happens with them, they'll stop having those conversations. And the organization will lose out in the long run.
